What is CODEX?

Collectively, the CODEX project has envisioned a consortial model for cultivating and sustaining deeper critical engagement with digital technologies in scholarship and teaching across our campuses.

Our vision includes the following proposed elements:

Ohio Five CODEX Institute

A one-week intensive summer session in which a cohort of faculty work in collaboration with instructional technologists, librarians, and students from the Ohio Five, as well as invited outside experts, to redesign or augment existing courses with new approaches that foster critical engagement with and through digital technologies. During the institute, faculty develop and test learning goals and projects, methods of assessing project-based student work, and practice new digital skills and methods. To sustain interest and participation beyond the summer institute, additional workshops and invited lectures would be conducted both virtually and in-person throughout the academic year.

Digital Labs

Labs paired with humanities and social science courses that provide space for students to develop proficiency with digital research methods and to collaborate with peers on project-based assignments. Labs are pedagogical opportunities in their own right, providing opportunities for students to not only use technology, but reflect on and evaluate technology within the context of the course material.

Summer Student Digital Research Fellowships

Summer research fellowships modeled largely after existing faculty-student research fellowships. Fellowship can take the form of faculty-initiated digital scholarship project or a student-initiated project undertaken with faculty mentorship. Fellows would form a cohort that would meet multiple times throughout their fellowships to share research experiences and help each other to develop new skills and techniques. The fellows would also present their work to other students and faculty as part of a traveling student symposium during the academic year.

Microgrants

Microgrants available to both students and faculty as a means of supporting meaningful student participation in digital projects throughout the academic year. These small competitive grants would support digital research assistant positions, independent student research projects, peer mentors or teaching assistants, and attendance at conferences to share the results of our digital scholarship and pedagogy.

Ohio Five Post-Doctoral and Post-Baccalaureate Fellows

An Ohio Five post-doctoral fellow who would coordinate administrative work involved in organizing the Ohio Five Digital Pedagogy Institute, activities of the Student Fellows, the traveling Student Symposium, and support for faculty in developing research and pedagogical projects.

A post-baccalaureate fellow who would support the post-doctoral fellow and teaching assistants working in courses and labs, and lead the group of student fellows engaged in digital projects.

Information Hub for Practitioners and Tenure/Promotion Review Committees

A robust repository of curated resources to assist with all phases of the digital scholarship lifecycle, focusing on issues of project planning, organization, accessibility, ethical and legal best practices, and long-term use and sustainability. The information hub also functions as a consortial hub for tenure and promotion committees with resources related to the evaluation of faculty digital research and pedagogy, including a directory of peer faculty contacts who could serve as collaborators, mentors, or external reviewers for tenure and promotion.
